Hi! I’m Jack, an 8-year-old who loves the ocean. My dad and I collect sea urchins to make cool lamps and decorations.

Did you know sea urchins are growing a bit out of hand in parts of the world? Because of overfishing, there aren’t enough predators to keep them in check. That means the urchins eat a lot of the kelp forests that young fish need to live in (and kelp forests also help store carbon!).

I think sea urchins are really pretty – but there are just too many of them right now. So when we collect them, we’re helping the ocean a little bit too. I love being out by the sea, learning new things, and see all the cool creatures out in the blue.
